The beauty industry can be lucrative and can prove a successful career choice for many. Choosing the course and specialised area that you want to pursue can be daunting but with the help of our fully qualified educators, we are here are to guide you into the career you’ve always wanted.

You first need to consider where you will train, there are 2 routes we would recommend – either train through a college or through an apprenticeship at a salon. Both these options will provide you with full accreditation and the required experience to get you started in your chosen area.

The college route will likely give you a wider knowledge base and you can spend time in a classroom environment perfecting your skills. We would recommend this option for people who want to build their confidence and skill set before working with clients. For a more practical approach, opt for an apprenticeship where you will learn on the job and get instant exposure to what it’s like to work in a salon. Either way, gaining relevant experience is vital to succeed in the beauty industry, the market is competitive, so you need to make sure the service you are offering is to a high standard.

Choosing Your Specialised Area

The beauty sector can be broken down into the following sub categories:

  • Massage & holistic therapy.
  • Skincare & aesthetics.
  • Make up artistry.
  • Nail technician services.
  • Lash & brow services.
  • Other general beauty (hair removal, spray tanning etc.)

It’s common for beauty practitioners to specialise in multiple areas. This increases your earning potential and is often more convenient for clients. The most popular treatments for customers are often nails, lashes and tanning. We would advise specialising in at least one of these areas because there is a reliable client base who frequently choose these treatments.

When choosing the beauty area you want to train in, it’s also important to consider where you will be operating once fully trained. Consider what treatments are popular, whether the market is saturated or if you could be a welcome addition to the beauty workforce in that area. It’s worth having a look at the price points so you can gauge if the beauty industry will provide a big enough income for you.

Choosing Your Career Path

Once you have trained and have relevant experience, you can start to consider how you will facilitate your income. You can either work for a salon or be self-employed, or in some cases do a combination of both. Working for a salon has benefits such as a guaranteed regular income, a pension scheme and worker benefits however self- employed practitioners often have a higher earning potential. If you go self-employed, you will have to make sure you have the relevant insurance and accreditation. It’s best to insure any equipment but also against your business in case of any potential business claims.

Prospects Of The Beauty Industry

The beauty sector in general is predicted to grow by up to 21.1% by 2022, that’s a huge increase in available income for many aspiring beauty practitioners. This increase can be partly attributed to the global Covid 19 pandemic where people have been unable to get beauty treatments and spend time on themselves. Once the UK moves out of lockdown, it’s expected people will rush to get beauty treatments and spend increasing amounts of money in salons as they have been unable to for an extended period of time.

Trends are expected to be more experimental, bold and daring as people move away from the natural and muted look that has been more popular in lockdown.
