The recent pandemic pushed many things online, from pub quizzes to music concerts and family gatherings. Having the option and ability to live life more virtually is fantastic in many cases. Still, some things are best face to face. For example, would you want open heart surgery from someone who had only received online training? I didn’t think so. So, where does that leave the beauty industry?
The theory is easily taught online, of course, but can you really substitute being hands on with a real person and a teacher in the room with you when it comes to the practical side? Personally, I wouldn’t want somebody fiddling with glue and fake lashes around my eyes, having received only online training. I’d prefer somebody who has already practised, with a skilled teacher present to help and correct, and I suspect others might feel the same.
Benefits of Online Beauty Training
Offering online beauty courses means that providers can reach a wider audience, and similarly, students aren’t restricted by geography. Courses are more accessible as costs can be kept down, and students don’t need to travel or find accommodation etc. So lot’s more people can be trained, allowing them to add to their service offering, which is a positive, especially with so many people struggling to make ends meet. Increasing your skill set affordably is incredibly desirable.
Virtual training can also often fit around busy schedules better. For example, if the lessons are recorded rather than live, students have the option to learn at a pace and time that suits them with the ability to pause, rewind and go over the information repeatedly. Great for busy mums or those already in full-time employment or with other commitments.
Drawbacks of Online Beauty Training
The obvious one, of course, is that there is never anyone physically in the room with you. You can rope in friends and family to act as guinea pigs for your practice and take photos to send off for evaluation, but you can only tell so much from an image. People taking virtual beauty courses may feel less confident in their ability due to not having that face to face teaching.
It can be harder to remain motivated and accountable when going it alone. If you know you have a course sitting there waiting for you to find the time, often it can get left on the back burner as other things take priority. So, you may find you never really get around to it, or you do it sporadically, making it hard to remember what you did last. For these reasons, self-study requires a lot of discipline.
You miss out on making connections. Attending in-person training means you get to meet others In your industry and possible form new connections and friendships. Virtual training means you miss out on the extra learning opportunities that a classroom environment provides. Fellow attendees may ask questions you hadn’t considered or share their own experiences and insights as beauticians.
Benefits of Classroom Beauty Training
Beauty is hands-on, so it makes sense that the training is too. There is no substitute for working on real people or having a teacher physically present to check your technique. Unfortunately, re-watching videos isn’t always enough to master tricky skills, so having a teacher in the room to demonstrate and help you can avoid frustration or doing it wrong.
Employers may prefer a candidate that received face to face training rather than only online. As mentioned previously, as a customer, I would prefer that my beautician had trained hands-on and face to face, not just online, and there are no doubt employers who feel the same. There is always the worry that someone might have skipped over some parts of the course to get through it quicker, whereas this isn’t possible with classroom beauty training.
When you learn in a group setting, you gain more insights and information from the questions asked by others. Things you may not have considered and also the experiences of the other students, their best practices and other hints and tips on how they do things or run their business. It’s an excellent opportunity to share valuable information beyond the course you are currently studying.
When you physically attend a course, it’s easier to stay motivated, and the provider holds you accountable. There can be a real buzz in a classroom, and that energy can become infectious as you are all keen to learn and do your best. This means you are likely to leave the training feeling driven to take the next steps, confident in your ability as it’s been checked and corrected first-hand.
One fantastic bonus benefit to classroom-based beauty courses is the new connections and friendships that can form. Meeting people in the same industry that may even be local to you is a great way to build a strong network. You never know what opportunities may arise from it, such as jobs or clients passed your way.
Is Classroom or Online Beauty Training Better?
Classroom!
